Sustainability at Ylläshumina
We want to do our part to reduce our environmental impact and be part of sustainable development. Green values are visible in our everyday operations, and we continuously strive to become more environmentally positive.
In our traditional hotel, which is unique in many ways by today's standards, great strides have been taken towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable energy solutions.
“We too believe that choosing and acquiring clean energy solutions is the best act people can do for the future. There is already great demand worldwide for low-emission and nature-saving solutions — alongside economic benefits, the choices on the scales are weighed also by future generations!”

Carbon neutrality as the goal
This season, the world's northernmost indoor battery storage systems have been acquired for Ylläshumina. The batteries charge when electricity prices are low and consumption is at its lowest. To maximise the benefit of the battery system, a total of 130 solar panels have been installed on the roof of Ylläshumina, and their use is directed straight to the battery system. At the end of the season, the intention is to invest in more solar panels and acquire air-to-water heat pumps for the main building. In addition to the battery system, solar panels and upcoming plans, all air conditioning systems have recently been renewed, and an OptiWatti system designed for remote control and optimisation of heating has been taken into use. After the renewed systems and made investments, Ylläshumina can be considered fully carbon neutral in terms of its energy system. The old oil heating system, built in connection with the 1990s expansion, will remain as an emergency backup alongside electric heating.
For the future
The ELY Centre defines the green transition as a change towards an ecologically sustainable economy and growth that is not based on the overconsumption of natural resources and fossil fuels. A sustainable economy, in turn, relies on solutions that promote low carbon emissions, circular economy and biodiversity.
